Jim Handlin, Ed D, is a Certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher trained at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School. He has taught the MBSR 8 week course developed by Jon-Kabat Zinn in New Jersey since 2004. His goal as a teacher is for each of his students to create and establish an individual mindfulness practice that will help them live with optimum health and well-being.
Dr. Handlin is a Founding Member and Educational Consultant to the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Center of NJ in Metuchen, NJ. He has taught over 40 cycles of the MBSR curriculum in the Summit and Edison areas of NJ. A lifelong meditator, student of meditation, and yoga practitioner / teacher, who has studied all over the world with exemplary teachers, Jim has brought his vision and skills to bear in education, medicine, health care and the corporate world.
He has taught MBSR in numerous venues including the Summit Medical Group in NJ and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been a speaker and workshop leader for a number of organizations including the Adult Education Program at the JCC Metrowest of NJ as well as for corporate fund-raisers at the United Bank of Switzerland. At the Pingry School in Martinsville, NJ, Jim started the longest running meditation program for adolescents in the U.S. and has also presented MBSR in numerous other educational venues, including Newark Academy and the Westfield and Metuchen School systems in NJ as well as at the Psychological Associations of NJ, Hunterdon County, Mercer County and Middlesex County. In addition to regularly teaching bi-annual MBSR classes through the MBSR Center of NJ in Metuchen and Summit, he sees a number of private MBSR clients.
Jim is also a well-published poet whose work has been chosen to be carved in marble in Penn Station and as a lifelong learner and educator, he holds a doctorate from Columbia University in Educational Administration. He has served of the Head of the Upper School and as a Headmaster of several independent schools. His passion is to help others live better quality lives by helping them to develop and sustain a personal, dynamic mindfulness practice. He knows first hand how mindfulness practice cultivates states of greater well-being and energy, clarity, peace and wisdom and wishes to skillfully impart its principles to his students.
